Monitor

We track rule changes and keep you in good standing.

A license is not a finish line. Once you are approved, the TTB and your state ABC expect a continuous stream of operational reports, excise tax payments, and records, filed accurately and on time. Miss a deadline, transpose a number, or fall behind on recordkeeping, and you can face penalties, interest, or a compliance review that pulls your team away from actually running the business.

Alcohol Industry Associates handles ongoing alcohol beverage compliance so those obligations are met without you having to become a regulatory expert. We build the reporting calendar, prepare and file your operational reports and excise tax returns, keep your records audit-ready, and monitor the regulatory changes that affect what you owe and when.

What Ongoing Compliance Covers

Every licensed producer, importer, and wholesaler carries recurring obligations. The exact filings depend on your permit type and the states you operate in, but the categories are consistent. We manage:

The Real Cost of Falling Behind

Compliance problems rarely start big. They start with one late report, one misclassified product, or one recordkeeping gap that goes unnoticed until a review surfaces it years later, with interest and penalties attached. At that point, fixing it costs far more time and money than staying current would have.

We keep clients ahead of the schedule instead of reacting to problems. If you have already fallen behind, we also handle catch-up filings and corrective work to bring you back into good standing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ongoing compliance for alcohol beverage businesses.

How often do I have to file TTB reports?

It depends on your permit type and volume. Operational reports and excise tax returns follow set schedules that differ for distilleries, wineries, and breweries, and some filings are more frequent than others. We map your specific obligations to a calendar so every filing has a known due date and owner.

What happens if I file a TTB report or excise tax return late?

Late filings can trigger penalties and interest, and a pattern of late or inaccurate filings can invite closer regulatory scrutiny. The good news is that staying current is entirely manageable with the right system. If you are already behind, we handle the catch-up filings and help resolve any resulting issues.

Can you fix years of missed or incorrect reporting?

Yes. Multi-year reporting gaps and errors are one of the most common issues we resolve. We reconstruct the records, prepare corrected filings, and put systems in place so the problem does not recur. Addressing it proactively is almost always better than waiting for the agency to find it.

What records am I required to keep, and for how long?

The TTB and states require specific production, transfer, tax, and inventory records, and there are minimum retention periods. The exact requirements depend on your operation type. We set up recordkeeping so the right records are captured and retrievable, which is what matters most if you are ever reviewed.

Do you handle both federal and state compliance?

Yes. We manage federal TTB obligations and the separate reporting and tax requirements of each state where you are licensed. Multi-state operators especially benefit from having one partner coordinating everything rather than juggling different deadlines in different jurisdictions.

How is excise tax on alcohol calculated?

Federal excise tax depends on the product type (spirits, wine, or beer), volume, and alcohol content, and certain producers qualify for reduced rates under federal law. States impose their own excise taxes on top of that. Because the rules are specific and the reduced-rate provisions have conditions, we calculate and file to make sure you pay what you owe, and not more.

I use accounting software already. Why do I need a compliance consultant?

Accounting software tracks your finances; it doesn't know the TTB's operational-report formats, the proof-gallon and tax-class rules, the CBMA reduced-rate conditions, or the state-by-state reporting calendars. The same gap applies to dedicated compliance software: it's only as good as the person still using it correctly. The most common failure we see is that the one or two people who knew the platform leave, and the staff who inherit it click through without understanding what they're reporting, so filings look done but reports stop reconciling and excise taxes get miscalculated, often unnoticed until an audit. We take ownership of the outcome, correct, on-time filings, regardless of who's on your team. See our breakdown of compliance software vs. a compliance partner.

Can you take over compliance for an operation that's already running?

Absolutely. Many clients come to us after getting licensed on their own and realizing the ongoing obligations are more than they expected. We can step in, assess where things stand, clean up anything outstanding, and manage compliance going forward.
